What this tool does
Model cow-calf, stocker/backgrounder, buy-feed-sell, or custom cattle enterprise margins, breakeven, cost of gain, and projected ROI.
Use this tool when
- Testing cattle purchase/sale assumptions.
- Estimating breakeven price.
- Comparing feed or performance scenarios.
- Building a cow-calf annual cost and margin model.
Before you begin
Gather the project information you already know. Leave Optional or Advanced fields alone until you need them, and review every editable assumption before relying on the result.
Recommended workflow
1. Choose enterprise mode
Select Cow-Calf, Stocker/Backgrounder, Buy-Feed-Sell, or Custom.
2. Enter common inputs
Add head count, ownership period, purchase/starting value, sale assumptions, death loss, shrink, marketing, freight, vet, mineral, pasture/lease, labor, financing, and miscellaneous costs as applicable.
3. Enter mode-specific drivers
For stockers, enter purchase/sale weights, ADG, days, and feed cost. For cow-calf, enter exposure, calving/weaning assumptions, calf weight/price, cull revenue, and annual cow costs.
4. Build scenarios
Compare up to three temporary user-defined cases.
5. Review sensitivity
Inspect how changes in sale price, feed cost, death loss, ADG, or weaning percentage affect the model.
6. Review margin and breakeven
Use the mode-appropriate profit/head, total profit/margin, breakeven, ROI, cost of gain, or cost per cow.
Key results
- Purchase or annual cow cost.
- Sale revenue.
- Variable and total costs.
- Cost of gain or cost per cow.
- Breakeven sale/calf price.
- Profit or margin per head/cow.
- Total projected profit/margin.
- Roi.
- Scenario and sensitivity comparison.
Save, export, and share
For meaningful work, use Save Project to create a .ra file before leaving. Use Export for reports/data and Share for email or copied summaries. The exact export formats available depend on the tool.
Important planning note
Outputs are planning estimates and not financial advice or market forecasts. Actual prices, performance, death loss, shrink, financing, feed costs, and marketing outcomes can differ materially.
