Understand Water Demand, Storage, and Recovery Time

Demand and storage answer different questions

Daily demand estimates how much water the livestock may consume in the planning scenario. Storage tells you how much water is immediately available before the source must recover it.

Normal versus peak demand

Use normal conditions for routine planning and the hot-weather scenario for peak-demand planning. Review user-entered adjustments such as lactation, forage condition, feed/salt effects, and safety factor.

Reserve storage

Reserve is based on the user-selected emergency period. Increasing reserve hours or days increases the required stored volume.

Refill time

Refill time depends on the volume that must be replaced and the source flow in gallons per minute.

Minimum source flow

If you choose a desired recovery period, the tool can calculate the minimum GPM needed to replace the planned volume within that time.

Read deficits in context

A storage deficit does not identify a single required fix. Capacity, source flow, refill period, herd distribution, and reserve target should be reviewed together.
